A new AARP survey of people age 50 and older shows that 24% of older workers are planning to make a job change this year, a 10% increase from last year, when just 14% indicated they were looking for new employment.
Making more money is the main reason older adults say they are looking for a job change. However, age discrimination is a concern among older Americans considering a job change. Seventy-four percent of older adults believe their age will be a barrier to getting hired.
They have good reason for that concern, according to AARP, which finds that 64% o workers over the age of 50 reported seeing or experiencing age discrimination.
They are also concerned about the impact of AI on their job security.
A key finding in the new report: 84% of prospective job changes say they will need help making that change. That help varies, from understanding how to apply their current skills to today’s jobs and how to get the training and skills they may be lacking.
