Her organization aims to help rural students understand their postsecondary options and opportunities, says Marjorie Betley, executive director of the STARS (Small Town and Rural Students) College Network.
Betley joined WorkingNation’s editor-in-chief Ramona Schindelheim for WorkingNation Overheard at College Board Forum 2024 in Austin, Texas.
She explains, “When it comes to higher education, there are more than 4,500 different colleges and universities. We want students to understand that there’s a really wide variety of different kinds of schools, different financial opportunities, different social and academic fits for them, so that they can make the best-informed decision when they’re taking that next step.”
Betley continues, “The STARS College Network is sharing information about different jobs and careers that are available now within those communities in business and agriculture in a really wide variety of areas.
“We want students to understand the breadth of what types of careers are out there in general, because you are only exposed to a fairly small subsection of what is available and what you can do or what you could start yourself.”
She adds that while more rural and small-town students complete high school than their urban and suburban counterparts, they attend and receive postsecondary credentials at a lower rate.
