John-Carlos Estrada on digital access in Austin

Thought leaders share ideas with WorkingNation Overheard at SXSW EDU 2022
-

Addressing the digital divide is an issue that is familiar to John-Carlos Estrada, anchor at CBS Austin. As a journalist, Estrada saw that divide magnified since the start of the pandemic.

Estrada moderated WorkingNation’s SXSW EDU panel – Closing the Hispanic Digital Skills Gap – and discussed, not only the problems, but solutions.

He also sat down with WorkingNation Overheard to talk about what he is seeing locally in Austin.

In Austin, Estrada says access to broadband and even knowing how to get online – with the onset of the pandemic – was difficult for some in the Latino community. He says it often falls on the younger, more tech-savvy members of a household to help the older people in the family navigate the digital space.

With parents who are originally from Mexico, Estrada says that growing up the role of translating often fell to him or his sister.
