At the end of 2024, the federal government employed just over 3 million people, or just under 2% of the entire U.S. civilian workforce, according to BLS data. In February, more than 62,000 federal jobs were cut, according to tallying by The Challenger Report.
In response to these job losses, Coursera is providing access to learning resources for federal workers as they determine next steps.
The offerings include skills learning in AI, data science, cybersecurity, project management – just to name a few. Coursera notes, “These resources can help you explore new career paths, build in-demand skills, and earn job-relevant credentials.”
The certificate learners can earn include those from Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM. Coursera says the level of skill attainment is based on “learner proficiency and career goals.”
People interested in learning more about these resources should check out Coursera’s Federal Workers in Transition page.
Included in the targeted guidance:
- Resume writing

Coursera reminds that these resources are focused on federal workers looking to transition into the private sector, as well – not just government opportunities.
